Drill: Against the Wall

I’m posting a few more new drills I recently worked in class. You can see them in action here http://www.vimeo.com/26160455

This one isn’t “new” but we added in sparring, giving it an interesting twist.

Participants: Minimum 3

Equipment: Pads or Sparring Gear (see variation below), “Exit Indicator”

Setup:
-One participant is the defender and begins against the wall/in a corner.
-Other participants are attackers and group in front of the defender.

Execution:
-On the instructors cue, the attackers swarm the defender attempting to stay against the wall (pushing, grabbing, striking, etc.)
-Defender must fight out and get to “exit indicator”. This may be a real exit or an object. Upon reaching, time is called.

Variations:
-Add a session of constant attack/self-defense after reaching the exit.
-Sparring Gear: Allow defender/attackers to send strikes while against the wall.
-Sparring Gear: Add on mini-sparring sessions (say 10 seconds) for the defender against each attacker.

Drill: Quick Draw

I’m posting a few more new drills I recently worked in class. You can see them in action here http://www.vimeo.com/26160455

Participants: Minimum 2

Equipment: An object: cone, tennis ball, weapon, etc.

Setup:
-The two participants face each other and place the object between them.
-Both squat down, with their hands angled inward between their legs, forearms resting against their thighs.

Execution:
On the instructors cue, both attempt to grab the object with their hand(s). You can have them simply reset, change partners or play around with penalties for the loser.

Variations:
-The loser has to do some exercise, either assigned by the instructor or the winner.
-Add in self-defense/attacks. The loser instantly becomes the attacker, the winner the defender. The attacker instantly attacks with whatever technique(s) is selected. (This was a very interesting variation, as both participants have to switch into attacker/defender mode very quickly.)

Drill: The Chain

I’m posting a few more new drills I recently worked in class. You can see them in action here http://www.vimeo.com/26160455

Participants: Minimum 4-5

Equipment: Kick Shields (or any large pad) for each participant.

Setup:
-Stack pads in a single column at one end of the gym.
-Students stand at opposite end of gym.
-One participant w/ a pad stands in front of the pad column.

Execution:
The padholder gets to pick one of the participants against the wall. That participant must then try to get to/touch the stack of pads while the padholder offers resistance in the form of blocking and pushing. Once the participant reaches the pad stack, time is called. The participant then takes the top pad from the stack and joins the original padholder. A new participant is named and now must get past 2 padholders. The number of padholders grows as the drill continues.

Defender with gun vs knife attacker intense training video

This one features Itay Gil. Great training drills in full body suit. Shows how hard it is for a person carrying a gun in a holster to back up and draw the weapon when he is suddenly attacked with a knife. The defenders in this drill mostly do the KM block and counter against the first attack, then attempt to move back at sharp angles to make it harder for the knife attacker to reach them. Sometimes it works, but often it doesn’t and it’s especially hard in close quarters. Shows you can’t always rely on a gun as a defense against a knife.

This is why we train.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7_eHq_Rpm8

Watching this video is real motivation for me. I think of it every time I train. I cannot imagine not being as prepared as possible for such a scary situation.

Thanks to people like John Whitman for trying to prepare us for such an event, even though hopefully none of us will have to encounter it.

John, If and/or when you do another Krav book, could you please include some info on what to do against multiple attackers like this?
